I have been boating and carrying out boat safety inspections for 17 years. I am qualified to carry out a bss on almost all types of boats including liveaboard, hire boats and work vessels. “The Boat Safety Scheme, or BSS, is a public safety initiative owned equally by the UK charity, the Canal & River Trust and the Environment Agency, a non-departmental public body. Our purpose is to help minimise the risk of boat fires, explosions, or pollution harming visitors to the inland waterways, the waterways' workforce and any other waterways users.
Just like a car, on most of the UK's inland waterways, a boat needs to be licensed, insured and have the boat-equivalent of a MOT - valid BSS certification - before it can cruise, or in some circumstances moor.
